Brides, How to Prep for your Makeup for your Big Day
Congratulations to all the lovely brides-to-be!
I always recommend getting a bridal makeup trial done beforehand! You will never know if a product doesn’t agree with your skin, if the makeup doesn’t last the entire day, or the colors chosen don’t quite work for you…unless you book a trial! We ASK so many questions at the trial to determine exactly what look you are wanting to achieve. After the trial, is when you can evaluate your look, the colors, how long everything lasts, etc. and let your makeup artist know what to change for your wedding day. We want you to enjoy your day and not stress about anything beauty related!
Here are a few tips I have for brides to prep for their wedding day makeup…
Skin Concerns
If you have specific skin concerns you are wanting to address and treat- I would recommend seeing a skin care therapist to put you on a skin care regime about 6 months pre wedding.
Facials
I would recommended getting a facial done about a week before your wedding day. Make sure you have tried this type of facial out beforehand and you know how your skin reacts to the products used. You do not want to be peeling, itchy, or breakout before your big day. A nice facial to do is the HydraFacial. This facial is great for everyone.
Dermaplaning
This treatment is AMAZING to do a few days before your wedding day. It is a gentle exfoliation that should be done by a PROFESSIONAL. It removes the surface layer of dead skin and all of your peach fuzz. This treatment makes your makeup apply so beautifully to the skin. Do not buy dermaplaning blades from the drug store or online and do it at home yourself- I tried this and scratched up my face causing redness and irritation. Not a good look!
SPF
The sun is so damaging to the skin- it makes your skin age like crazy. You need to be applying sunscreen daily. Imagine getting a sunburn a few days before your wedding? Ideally you should be reapplying sunscreen every 2-3 hours when you are in the sun. I recommend the Powder Me SPF 30 dry sunscreen powder from jane iredale for easy application throughout the day- even on top of your makeup!
Exfoliants
DO NOT USE any retinoid products or AHAs for a least a week before your wedding. You do not want to have flaky, irritated, or red skin for your big day!
Waxing or Threading
Waxing or threading should be done by someone you have gone to before and trust. You want your brows to still be there for your wedding day! This should be done about 4 days before your wedding.
Eyelash Extensions or Eyelash Tinting
Eyelash tinting is a great thing to do pre-wedding. It makes all of your lashes look really dark and accentuates the eyes (especially great for the fair ladies with blonde lashes). I recommend getting the blue/black tint for the darkest lashes possible. Do this a few days before your wedding.
Eyelash extensions with or without tinting (I suggest with tinting) should be done very close to your wedding day. A day or two before is ideal. You do not want any gaps in your lashes from them falling out. As makeup artists, we can always fix that though:) We got you. Make sure you have also had a trial done with someone who is going to use the same products for your bridal set. Some people are allergic to the lash adhesive that is used with eyelash extensions- so just make sure you have tried it previously.
Spray Tanning
If you are going to get a spray tan for your wedding, I would do this about 3-4 days beforehand. PLEASE make sure you go for a trial for this treatment as well. I personally have had spray tans done where afterwards my hands and feet look like I have some sort of weird disease. I suggest to get a lighter application of the spray done on your face as well- for example- one coat on the face vs two coats on the body. Be prepared to moisturize more than usual after your tan as it does tend to dry our your skin a bit.
Lip Prep
Give your lips a good scrub for a few days leading up to your wedding. Lipstick will always apply more evenly to lips that are well exfoliated. No peeling or dry cracked lips please! I also recommend a good lip treatment that can be applied daily to make sure your lips are super soft for your wedding day. I recommend jane iredale’s HydroPure Hyaluronic Lipglosses- these plump with peptides, exfoliate with lactic acid, and hydrate with hyaluronic acid. A good lip scrub is from E.L.F beauty- their sugar lip exfoliators.
